Has anyone ever managed to run an aquaponics system with no purchased fish food? Are duckweed and soldier fly larvae enough to sustain the fish?

I have twice grown duckweed in outdoor aquaponics tanks. In the first, the fish ate exclusively duckweed, but the duckweed grew so fast I had to harvest half of it every 3-4 days. The second time, the duckweed seemed mostly in balance with the fish who constantly ate it. I have used three species: spirodela, lemna minor, and trisulca. The first time, by the end of the summer there was no lemna minor left (the fish ate all of it). The second time, I was growing the lemna minor in a separated part of the tank so the fish wouldn't decimate it, until some animal blundered through my system and mixed it with the fish. The fish ate all the lemna minor before I could get it away from them.

A good mat of duckweed also makes a micro ecosystem for a number of arthropods and smaller fauna, which the fish like to eat. The second year I found a dragonfly nymph living there, happily eating any mosquito larve that appear. The fish liked the freshwater shrimp.

Somebody pointed out on another post a day or two ago that the introduction of wild insects, falling into the system, is a vector for disease and parasites which you do not want. I would prefer the more "self-sustaining" system, using local insects as an additional nutrient source, but I think he's right about the parasites and such.

Regarding insects, I had some success in the summer with fly traps: something like this with the bottom cut off and foam around the outside so it could float in the tank. I used bottles with handles so I could put the bait inside the handle (I heated and pinched it shut at the bottom of the handle). It worked very well; the flies would get trapped and lay eggs on the bait (meat cuttings), the maggots would fall into the tank too. The fish were checking it about every minute, eating the flies as soon as they hit the water, so I had trouble telling if it was working until I spotted the maggots.
I did worry about harmful bacteria (e-coli, salmonella) from the bait entering the water, but I sampled it and did some agar cultures and didn't find anything harmful. I still didn't want to take chances, so I switched over to peanut butter as bait, which didn't work quite as well. Now that it's cooler out it has stopped working, so I took them out.

That's a neat fly trap/food source. Did you have to re-stock the rotten meat occasionally, or just once per summer?

If I had a large enough system, I'd like to try something like having a bat house (high) over open water so the bat guano falls into the water. This would effectively be using bats to harvest the local ecosystem for insect nutrients which they then deposit into the aquaponics system. The system would have to be large enough to handle the extra poop, but I think the plants would benefit.

I've been pondering putting a bug zapper over the tank to help feed the fish. I'm not sure if that's a good idea nor if the fish would even eat the half-carbonized morsels. I fed the big goldfish some finely-chopped bits of (cooked) chicken once. They seemed to like it.  [Read More]

This difficulty is solved naturally, for the reason that ammonia is decomposed, inside the presence of oxygen, in to nitrites and afterwards nitrates, which are benefic for the plants. When the amount of nitrites reached the proper level, seeds are propagated in netting pots. At their store plants grow and assimilate the nitrates, thus leaving the lake fresh and clean for that fish.

A full cycle consumes to 3 months, that is why it is recommended that the seeds will be propagated after a few months from the acquisition in the fish. Because this is really a continuous cycle, there aren't going to be periods in which the plant will not have enough supplies to mature, unless the fish are certainly not in good condition. So, apart from the proven fact that you grow fish for ones meals, you will also need the fish poop to line the aquaponic system as this can be a starting point of the entire business.

Aquaponic Gardening - The Advantages

Aquaponic gardens may give you lots of vegetables and tasty fish, they are great for almost any home as well in terms of any age and occupation possibly you have. However, they will not manage themselves! It is true which they require very little attention, but it is essential that you simply give them those few minutes a day everyday in order to obtain great results and keep the farm producing for a long time of time.

The key process in aquaponics can be aeration. If the drinking water is properly aerated, then your fish will be happy as well as your plants will grow usually. On the other hands, if the water is just not properly oxygenized, then there are few chances that your farm will survive for more than a couple of days.

Aquaponic Gardening - The Advantages
Visit this site : www.aquaponics4you.com

The reasons why aeration is indeed important are quite easy and simple to understand for every person. First of all, the dissolved oxygen is essential for the fish to help breathe. Even though the species of fish live under water they still have to breathe and just like in case there is other animals, they have to have oxygen to survive. After they lack oxygen they die, thus the balance from the aquaponic system is lost and inside of days your plants will quickly get yellowish and eventually die out.

As this became not enough, the fish excrements are usually decomposed and transformed via toxic ammonia into useful nitrates in the presence of oxygen. So, if the water is just not properly aerated the fish poop aren't going to be transformed, the plants will have nothing to eat, as the fish will die drunk with ammonia. This is just not a very pleasant point of view, isn’t it? This is why you will have to monitor the quality of your water everyday and have a back-up plan in the event the power gets off and also the air pumps will not be able to function. This is the only way through that you can save your aquaponic system and make it work for a long time of time. Your plants as well as your fish will thank you for your! [Read More]

Aquaponic Farming When Will the First Plants Be Ready

Starting off an aquaponic garden is often rather an easy task, especially in case you have already tried the hydroponic system. Yet, many people still have doubts about the potency of such a system. Should you be one of them, then you probably need to know more about the aquaponic system and about the way it is going to switch your life. Well, continue reading and part of your questions will get their answers.

First of all it have to be mentioned that the aquaponic system is not meant at all at modifying the plants which will probably be put in the netting pot. No substance will speed their growth with out additional, human help will be given for the crops being available earlier than they'd be if cultivated from the ground. What aquaponics does is merely to replace the ground with water filled up with naturally obtained nutrients from the fish. Thus, if you want a system which can provide tomatoes in just a couple of weeks, then you are definitely from the right place.

Aquaponic Farming When Will the First Plants Be Ready Visit this site : www.aquaponics4you.com

The aquaponic system is organic and natural, which means that the plant will track the normal stages in its development and may grow as if it were planted from the ground. So, in order to correctly estimate the time when you should have the first crops look for the package and see just how much time that particular plant must grow in the ground as that is the exact time in which you should have your fist crops.

If you start your aquaponic back garden now, then you should add about 3 month on the date from the seed starting package, as you will not be able to plant the seeds before ammonia from the fish excrements will change into nourishing substances and accomplishing this will take about a few months. No fertilizers or chemical compounds which can speed plant growing can be used as this will kill the fish and eventually ruin your aquaponic back garden, but you can skip those a few months by inserting nitrates from the water from the first days you simply purchase the fish tank.

Vegetables grown in aquaponic gardens need the maximum amount of time to develop because the ones grown in the bottom, which guarantees you tasty and healthy vegetables. So, there is no have to be suspicious or doubtful about the products the crops obtained from the aquaponic system. They are as tasty and healthy as may be, sometimes healthier than what you find available! [Read More]

Aquaponic Farming the Easy Way

Planting the seeds in your aquaponic garden is less difficult than putting them inside ground. You just have to use them a netting pot and … this can be it! Then you have to wait for them to start vegetating and grow. Even so, there is one little aspect you must know before placing the seeds which is – the ideal moment when the seeds should be rooted.

Many people purchase the particular fish, place them inside tank and in the identical day they also place the seeds inside pots. This is undoubtedly the worst way of approaching aquaponics for the reason that seeds, even though will grow and develop up to a certain point, they will die within days after they finish their unique supplies if there are no nutrients inside water on which they can feed.

Thus, the perfect moment to place the seeds in the pots is when the fish excrements have became nutrients. The process through that you can obtain nutrients for your plants is fairly simple. After you place the fish into your tanks, they will start freeing excrements into your water. Because the excrements consist of ammonia, they are highly toxic for the fish. However, do not be worried about that, as this issue is solved by nature itself. There are bacteria which often transform the ammonia into nitrites and then into nitrates. In order to your plants to grow you would like nitrates, so once accomplishing this of decomposing and transforming ammonia ends, the water will get ready to support the plant seeds.

Aquaponic Farming the Easy Way
Visit this site : www.aquaponics4you.com

The entire process usually takes up to 3 many weeks, time in which you can't place any type of seeds inside pots as they will definitely die. There are also ways to speed up the course of action by inserting nitrates into your water before the bass excrements can transform. Even so, many people do not wish to interfere in nature’s means. However, no matter what way you ultimately choose, it is recommended to monitor the number of ammonia, nitrites and nitrates from your water, so that you can always know the caliber of your water for both your fish and your vegetables.

Planting the seeds in the right time is essential if you wish good crops and healthful fish, so monitor the caliber of your water permanently, prior to and after planting. It does not take only way through that you can obtain good crops. [Read More]
